Centre for Research on Intermediality Lunch-Talk at 成人VR视频

The of l鈥橴niversit茅 de Montr茅al, in collaboration with Media@成人VR视频 and the Department of Art History and Communications Studies, is pleased to invite you to a lunch-talk to be held at the 成人VR视频 Faculty Club, 3450 McTavish, in the "Old 成人VR视频 Room鈥 on the 3rd floor, Friday January 19th, 2007 from 12 to 2 pm.

Andr茅 Habib (from Intermedialit茅s) will lead the discussion around the theme:

Electronical Media Uses and Cultural Practices.

The discussion will deal with the cultural practices of those who use electronic media for the production and dissemination of cultural works. It will take up the question of esthetics where Benjamin left it (with the loss of the auratic and the cult value of art) so as to pose it once again in terms of the actual social uses of electronic media and of the cultural objects with which they are engaged. Will Straw鈥檚 article (forthcoming) deals with the role of the videocassette in acclimatizing audiences to the current cinema through the aesthetic reactivation of a semiotic past. Jonathan Sterne, building on his book The Audible Past, examines the success of the mp3 format, tracing a balance between its mediocre technical quality and the social performativity of its uses.

Guests:

Will Straw (Department of Art History and Communication Studies, 成人VR视频) and Jonathan Sterne (Department of Art History and Communications Studies, 成人VR视频)

The Intermediality Winter Workshops are held this year at 成人VR视频: on this occasion, the CRI new members will have the opportunity to present their recent work in the Intermediality field. The workshops will adopt the form of a radio dialogue: every debate will be lead by a host, and the guests will dialogue on the given topic. The workshops will take place at noon. A light buffet will be served before the opening of the meeting. These workshops will be held once a month, during the 2007 winter session (the complete program will be soon available) and will be recorded. They will be available afterwards on the CRI WebSite .

The workshops are opened to everyone.
