He was also a lifelong advocate of Protestant Christianity.\n \n Merging religion and science in w ays that may seem contradictory today\, Dawson believed that studying natu re revealed God’s design. As evolutionary theories emerged\, he defended t he Biblical account of creation and rejected the idea that species\, inclu ding humanity\, became more complex over time. He maintained that all life began in a single act of Creation only a few thousand years ago\, and tha t humans were uniquely made in God’s image. He believed that the first peo ple were monotheists\, before many cultures degenerated into polytheism wi th many gods and spirits.\n \n These beliefs shaped what Dawson hoped visito rs would learn at the Redpath. Placing human artifacts alongside animal fo ssils from different eras challenged the idea of successive evolutionary s tages. Displaying items only from non-monotheistic cultures reinforced the ir difference from Christianity. Most importantly\, Dawson saw in carefull y ordered natural collections a clear demonstration of God’s creative powe r and intentional design.\n \n Inspired by Dawson’s blend of religion and sc ience\, Artful Naturalism asks: how do we order the world today? Integrate d into the permanent exhibitions\, each artwork reimagines boundaries betw een “natural” and “unnatural\,” human and animal\, spiritual and earthly. Dawson’s Desk recalls the Victorian era\, while Nadia Huggins and Gabriel Dharmoo explore these themes in contemporary terms.\n \n We invite you to th ink alongside us: What categories of knowledge have we inherited? What if we see ourselves as knowledge makers and shapers?\n \n – Hillary Kaell\n \n Th is exhibit is a TERA collaboration. Others include the interactive website www.teracollective.com and an experimental volume called The Artful Natur alist.\n\n \n\nThe exhibit will be open from 17 January to 21 February\, w ith a live performance by Gabriel Dharmoo on 21 February.\n DTSTART:20260117T170000Z DTEND:20260221T210000Z LOCATION:Redpath Museum\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C4\, 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Artful Naturalism: Special Exhibition at the Redpath Museum (17 Jan - 21 Feb) URL:/anthropology/channels/event/artful-naturalism-spe cial-exhibition-redpath-museum-17-jan-21-feb-370398 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
