³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ

Internship Spotlight: Penelope Duchemin

I am Pénélope Duchemin, currently a student at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, majoring in Political Science with a double minor in Art History and International Development Studies.

I have a real passion for art. Indeed, architecture and visual arts courses at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ have triggered a desire to learn even more about these topics, and even to consider a professional career. They allowed me to reveal this passion, and career opportunities. I now try to combine many of my passions and thus achieve the path I aspire to. The environment in which I am today in Montreal is very stimulating, as I am immersed in the in-situ art works, urban art and many museums.

I participated this year in the contemporary art exhibition ‘Ecole publique’, a Montreal artistic collective, for which I have written narrative texts. This adds to my volunteer participation in a Gaumont retrospective at two cultural centres in Montreal (society of technological arts - SAT - and the Cinémathèque québécoise). I also followed courses in history of architecture and Visual Arts, which made me realize my professional ambitions.

My artistic curiosity, my desire to learn and understand, pushed me to apply to this internship. The Musée du Louvre is a museum that I admire very much, in particular its capacity to adapt to the contemporary world while still preserving its historical inheritance. It represents exactly my interest and my willingness to find a balance between contemporary issues and visual art.

It is this possibility of combining many of my passions that motivated my willingness to do this internship. Working at Le Louvre for two months would help me to develop my skills and to reach the career I aspire to.

The Louvre Museum is today the most visited museum in the world. Conceived in 1793, it is recognized nationally and internationally as it houses art works known around the world (« La Joconde », for example). If it aims to be universal, its mission remains very singular in the sense that it wishes to renew the traditional role of the museum, to move from a very vertical relationship with the public to a more horizontal one, more oriented towards exchange and sharing. It prone the idea that art must be accessible to all, which is made possible by free access for young people and for everyone one Sunday a month.

Moreover, it is a museum that, if it is very old, tries to adapt to the contemporary world by organizing original events. As a matter of fact, the’ Nocturnes' are organized once a month. These are free and present a new way to discover art, at night, through a festive and privileged event. The same is true for the ‘JR-Le Louvre’ very recent partnership, when the contemporary artist JR has made a temporary installation on the Louvre pyramid. This partnership has demonstrated the Museum's ability to work with current artists and adapt to today’s world while continuing to preserve its unique historical and cultural heritage and singular material. It oscillates between modernity and historical richness.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to prepare two speeches for the general administrator Anne Laure Béatrix, working in the head office. The first one was intended for the event Communicating the Arts, at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Montréal, on the theme "How does the Louvre Museum address its new audiences?". The second one was intended to the Louvre’s school art history student about "Managing a Great Museum". In addition, I was an assistant during private view, shootings in the museum’s rooms, I was asked to propose visuals for the communication of new exhibitions, I worked with the communication department, in particular with the press and social medias on different projects.

This internship allowed me to learn a lot about managing a museum, especially a internationally known museum, its goals, its ambitions of universality, exchange and widespread access to culture. I am very grateful for the award I had the chance to recive, and for this internship opportunity that confirmed my willinginess to persue in this path. It has refined my career percepectives and goals and cultivated the ambition to continue in this direction.
