Francisco Ruge-Murcia awarded the Senior Houblon-Norman Fellowship from the Bank of England for 2025-2026

This prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Bank of England to a tenured full or chaired professor to promote research into and disseminate knowledge and understanding of the working, interaction and function of financial business institutions in the UK and elsewhere and the economic conditions affecting them. The Houblon-Norman Fellowship was established in 1944 to celebrate the 250^th anniversary of the Bank of England and it is named after the first Governor of the Bank, Sir John Houblon, and the Governor at the time of the anniversary, Montagu Norman.

Victoria Zinde-Walsh's academic achievements include role-modelling and mentoring of young female scholars in a male dominated field. Her distinguished work in econometrics has served as example and inspiration for younger female economists and econometricians.

She has also played an important role in unifying the econometric community in Canada as Director of the Econometrics Study Group with its yearly conference. Her nomination letters from female scholars who grew and blossomed under Victoria’s wing are enthusiastic and full of genuine admiration of their mentor.

Nine ��VR��Ƶ researchers selected in newest round of Canada CIFAR AI Chairs

CIFAR today announced its newest cohort of Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, which includes nine researchers from ��VR��Ƶ, bringing the total number of ��VR��Ƶ researchers named to the program to 17. These top academic researchers are part of the $125 million Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, the world’s first national strategy of its kind. The Canada CIFAR AI Chair Program represents an investment of $30 million at nine universities, and mobilizes over 150 researchers across the country.

Professor Ragep Awarded Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities

Professor Jamil Ragep (Institute of Islamic Studies) is the recipient of the 2019 Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities. The award will be presented by the Turkish President Erdogan at a ceremony in Ankara on December 30.

Ragep is the Canada Research Chair in the History of Science in Islamic Societies.

Three outstanding women named finalists for the 2019 Cundill History Prize

Three finalists for the 2019 Cundill History Prize were announced last night at an event at Massey College, Toronto. The finalists, all female, are UCL Professor of German History, Mary Fulbrook, Harvard Professor and New Yorker staff writer, Jill Lepore, and Julia Lovell, Professor of Modern China at Birkbeck College at the University of London. These three extraordinary authors approach difficult subjects, opening sometimes uncomfortable conversations around the past to help us better understand their repercussions today.

This randomized control trial study in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, demonstrates that limited access to affordable early childcare inhibits poor urban women’s participation in paid work.

Green Velvet was selected by the jury comprised of writers Esi Edugyan, Iain Reid and Lisa Moore. Department of Linguistics cracks top 20 of QS World University Rankings by Subject

The QS World University Ranking has five subjects at ��VR��Ƶ ranked in the top 20 worldwide, including Linguistics which made a big jump from 38 to 17 and cracked the top 20.

Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources. The first two of these are QS’s global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess institutions’ international reputation in each subject. The second two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject.

Celebrating its 11th year, the Cundill History Prize announced a record number of submissions for 2018, with more than 400 titles accepted, up 25 percent from last year. Five jurors were recently named to judge the impressive list of titles, which includes authors from richly diverse backgrounds tackling subjects as varied as religion and war, feminism and natural disasters, global finance and music.
