What is Homework Zone?

Founded in 2011, Homework Zone (HZ) is an after-school mentoring program connecting ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ student volunteers with elementary and secondary school students in schools around Montréal,Ìýand inÌýKahnawa:ke (traditional territory of the Kanien'kehá:ka First Nation)

Under the mandate of the Branches Program, Homework Zone has worked towards promoting pathways to higher education and achieving equitable access to education through academic support, academic enrichment activities and strong mentorship connections. Through this endeavour, the program aims to enable both ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ and Indigenous students to develop leadership skills and build a support network before they embark on their career path.

Hear it from our student mentors, coordinators, mentees and partners as they present the highlights of their experiences with the Homework Zone program, in this video:

How HZ Works

At HZ, we create an oasis for students where they can challenge themselves and nurture positive relationships within the school environment. Each 90-minute HZ session is split into two 45-minute parts:

  1. AcademicÌýsupportÌý(ie.,Ìýhomework completion, problem solving, reading);
  2. Imagination-based and academic enrichment activities or workshops offered by ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ students or community groups that focus on creativity, expression and building relationships.

³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ is on land that long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst
Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. We acknowledge
and thank the diverse Indigenous people whose footsteps have marked this territory on which
peoples of the world now gather.
