Equipment Inspections

Inspections are carried out annually and are typically scheduled from 6am – 2:30pm WednesdayÌýto Fridays.Ìý

Since the testing, inspection and repairs process may potentially be intrusive, the following steps are part of our procedures:

  • We give notice to Building Directors via email, advising in advance of testing or work to be performed
  • We post signage at building entrances to advise the community of site visits and testing in progress
  • We limit the amount of time building users are exposed to noise as a result of equipment testing

We ask for the Building Director’s cooperation in order to perform the annual inspections and ask that theyÌýadviseÌýall building occupants of the inspectionÌýand to advise us as soon as possible if:

  1. There are any rooms that cannot be enteredÌýdue to sensitive experiments, access restrictions, etc.
  2. These inspections could interfere with important activities (exams, special events, etc.) in the building.

Those involved in the inspection process have been advised to be respectful of building activities, and to cooperate with the users and occupants.Ìý

Proper signalization will be installed at strategic points throughout the building, advising incoming staff, students and visitors that tests are in progress.Ìý

Fire Alarm Inspections Consist of:

  • Ringing of the fire bells to ensure thatÌýall bells function within normal parameters. Depending on the size of the building, the testing should last anywhere between 5 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Room-to-room testing of all smoke/heat detectors: the process involves smoking or heating each detector until they react and send a signal to the fire panel. This process requires between 1 to 3 minutes per detector.
  • A test of all manual pull stations. All manual pull stations are pulled and reset.

Sprinkler Inspections Consist of:

  • AÌýroom-to-room visual inspection of each sprinkler head is conducted.
  • Further system tests are conducted in the sprinkler room and do not affect building operations.

Maintenance of Fire Equipment


After each inspection, a detailed report is received by the Operations sector andÌýanalyzed by theÌýFire Prevention Office whoÌýrecommends or requests repairs to be made on the equipment. ÌýFollowing this, aÌýspecialist is scheduled to complete the repairs and bring the equipment back to working order and NFPA code.Ìý
