U.S. President Donald Trump recently accused Canada of refusing to certify U.S.-made Gulfstream aircraft and threatened to retaliate by decertifying Canadian-made planes in the United States鈥攁n action that would effectively ground them. But, as is often the case with Trump鈥檚 more extreme threats, his staff quickly walked it back.

According to Prof. Karl Moore, it would be difficult for Trump to compel U.S. regulators to follow through on such a move. The Federal Aviation Administration operates at arm鈥檚 length from the government, he noted, and its officials are serious professionals who base their decisions on safety, not politics. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think we鈥檒l get to that because it doesn鈥檛 make sense,鈥� he added.
