October 6:Â Walking as a Tool for Improving Health, with Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta
Walk, don’t drive, if you want to stay healthy!Â
Improve your health by increasing your physical activity. Join Dr. Dasgupta and learn how by simply walking more you can reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.   Â
Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, Professor of Medicine at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, leads a study on the beneficial effects of walking to help reduce the risks of developing chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes. She has also done research on walkable neighborhoods. According to Dr. Dasgupta, the walkability of our environment should be that extra opportunity for integrating activity into our day. “If we live in a walkable neighborhood we should take advantage of it, because it can contribute to our total physical activity. She adds “It is a little bit like having a treadmill in our basement. The treadmill is a great tool for keeping fit, as long as it is used.â€Â

It is becoming more and more clear that there is a strong interrelationship between the body and the mind. While sick people may not exactly be able to laugh their way back to health, scientists are looking very seriously at the potential therapeutic value of humor and play. There appears little question that mental attitude can influence how we deal with stress and how we recover from certain illnesses. Unfortunately, though, sometimes people place too much hope on the power of "positive thinking." Join Dr. Joe Schwartz and laugh a little, and learn a lot about the value of humor in managing stress! You may even experience a little magic…..
