CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#7) : No. 1 ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ dominant in women's hockey

Published: 13 October 2009

OTTAWA (CIS) - The two-time defending national champion ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Martlets top the CIS women's hockey coaches poll for the second time in as many weeks after opening the regular season with a convincing 5-0 win over Concordia, last Friday.

Ìý

Also leading CIS rankings this week are the Trinity Western Spartans in both women's and men's soccer, the Lethbridge Pronghorns in women's rugby and the Guelph Gryphons in both women's and men's cross country.

Ìý

In women's hockey, the Martlets (1-0) extended their overall win streak against CIS opponents to 55 games going back to a 2-1 shootout loss to Alberta on Dec. 30, 2007. Alberta holds the CIS record of 67 consecutive overall victories.

Ìý

³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ, which has been ranked No. 1 in each of the past 31 national polls dating back to November, 2007, will be back on the ice Saturday when they host Ottawa.

Ìý

The 2009-10 edition of the Martlets is without head coach Peter Smith, who is on sabbatical to coach with the Canadian Olympic team, and three-time all-Canadian goaltender and Olympic gold medallist Charline Labonté, who is also spending the year with the national team. Also lost from the last two CIS championship squads is three-time all-Canadian rearguard Catherine Ward, who graduated last spring and hopes to secure a spot on the Olympic roster.
