The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
The Program on Global Security and Sustainability seeks to protect the security and well-being of people and the environment around the world. To meet these broad objectives, the international program focuses on several areas of concern. The Foundation works to encourage peace within and among countries, conserve global biological diversity, support responsible reproductive choices and reduction of maternal mortality, and protect human rights and strengthen the system of international justice. The Foundation funds work in about 60 countries, with special emphasis on four important countries in different regions of the world: India, Mexico, Nigeria, and Russia.

Conservation and Sustainable Development
Please note that the only subtheme accepting proposals for March 1, 2009 is the Northern Andes Initiative.

Human Rights & International Justice
MacArthur seeks to further the development of an international system of justice and advance human rights around the globe, with a special focus on Mexico, Nigeria, and Russia.

International Peace and Security
The Foundation鈥檚 grantmaking to address the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction is currently under review. New guidelines for International Peace and Security grantmaking will be posted in the spring of 2009.

Global Migration & Human Mobility
MacArthur will be providing a limited number of grants in the
following areas:
路 Governance of global migration;
路 Migration and development; and,
路 Re-conceptualizing global human mobility

Population and Reproductive Health
Two themes form the core of the area's grantmaking: Reducing maternal mortality and morbidity; and Advancing young people's sexual and reproductive health and rights.
