Media Invitation - National Addictions Awareness Week 2007
The emergency rooms of the MUHC (CUSM) see patients every day, from young adolescents to adults, who are having an adverse reaction to some recreational drug including alcohol. These patients present with a variety of symptoms including seizures, psychosis, heart damage and coma. "The adverse effects of substance abuse range from cognitive impairment to death," says Dr. Martin Lalibert茅, specialist in emergency medicine and medical toxicologist at the MUHC. He also notes that one of the greatest risk factors for long-term addiction is drug use before age 15. "The key is to prevent kids from experimenting with these drugs in the first place."
To tell you more about the harmful and potentially fatal effects of drugs and of some of the new drugs targeting young kids in particular, Dr. Lalibert茅 will be joined by Officer Laurent Dyke of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montr茅al and Alvin Powell, former NFL athlete and Head of Prevention Services for Saving Station Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse, on November 19, as part of National Addictions Awareness Week.
