  and legal history when she sued the\nToronto Police Force for negligence 
 and gender discrimination – and\nwon.\nDuring her precedent-setting case\,
  she fought to hold police\nliable for failing to warn women of the serial
  rapist operating in\ntheir neighbourhood. She also linked this misconduct
  with wider\nCharter equality issues of systemic sexism and discrimination
 \nwithin the police force itself.\nThroughout her legal battle\, Jane Doe 
 challenged myths and\nstereotypes about women and sexual assault. After le
 ading the\nneighbourhood postering campaign that led to the rapist's arres
 t\,\nshe fought to frame the trial of her rapist in her own terms.\nJane D
 oe was the first woman to win the right to sit in on the\npreliminary hear
 ing in her rapist's trial. Her 11-year civil trial\nmarked the first time 
 the state was held liable for the way it\ninvestigates crime. Jane Doe has
  continued to speak and write about\nsocial and legal issues relating to v
 iolence against women in the\ncontext of equality and within a feminist\,
