 s.  \n\n\nDr.\nAsha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania\, who took office 1 February 2
 007\, is\nthe third Deputy Secretary-General to be appointed since the pos
 t\nwas established in 1997. Dr. Migiro served as Minister of Foreign\nAffa
 irs and International Cooperation for the Republic of Tanzania\nfrom 2006-
 2007 -- the first woman to hold that position since its\nindependence in 1
 961. Before that\, she was Minister for Community\nDevelopment\, Gender an
 d Children for five years.   As\nForeign Minister\, Dr. Migiro spearheaded
  Tanzania 's engagement in\nthe pursuit of peace\, security and developmen
 t in the Great Lakes\nRegion. She served as Chair of the Council of Minist
 ers' meetings\nof the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region\,
  a\nprocess that culminated into a Pact on Security\, Stability and\nDevel
 opment in the Great Lakes Region.   Prior to\nGovernment service\, Dr. Mig
 iro pursued a career in academia at the\nFaculty of Law at the University 
 of Dar-es-Salaam. She headed the\nDepartment of Constitutional and Adminis
 trative Law from 1992 to\n1994\, and the Department of Civil and Criminal 
 Law from 1994 to\n1997. Her work was published widely in local and interna
 tional\njournals.\nCo-sponsored by the Sauvé Scholars Foundation.\n
