We are very excited to launch our 2018-2019聽season, with several聽brand聽new additions to the program as well as the usual favourites. Over 600 performances by members of Schulich鈥檚 vibrant musical community are on offer, presentations by our world-class researchers as well as visiting guests, masterclasses by international guest artists, a new concert series, and a new composition competition to add to our long-established list of student competitions.聽
Jam sessions have long been a cornerstone of jazz communities in cities around the world. In addition to offering playing and networking opportunities for the participants, they also act as a chance for anyone who shows up to celebrate the music they love.
In Montreal, there were three main jams for many years 鈥 Monday鈥檚 session at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, Diese Onze on Tuesday nights, and Grumpy鈥檚 Bar on Wednesdays. These events mostly took place around downtown Montreal, so there was an opportunity for a jam to open up in another of the city鈥檚 neighbourhoods.

The Schulich School of Music is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Barbara Whitley, a long-time friend and supporter of the School. Dr, Whitley received her BA from 成人VR视频 in 1940 and an Honorary Doctorate in Arts in 1992, and was an accomplished actor, philanthropist and volunteer. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday this past聽April.

Ryan Nauta (tenor),聽Jonah Spungin (baritone), Jessica Burnside (soprano) and Elie Manousakis (soprano) performed as part of聽in a masterclass in Tanna Schulich Hall where Mouskouri (DLitt 2013)聽offered guidance based on a wealth of experience from her 60-year career.
Earlier this year, cellist and Schulich professor Matt Haimovitz was appointed as the first-ever John Cage Fellow at the New School's . As part of this artist-in-residence program, Haimovitz will be actively involved in Mannes activities, including acting as an ensemble coach, teaching private lessons, and engaging in joint endeavors聽with Schulich.
Congratulations to Amy Hillis (D.Mus 2019), who won the 41st this past weekend for her stunning final-round performance with collaborative pianist . As the first-prize winner, Hillis received an award totalling $15,000, including a $8000 cash prize, a residency and recital at Italy's this summer and a multi-city Canadian tour in the fall.
In January of this year, Greg Burlet (MA 2013) launched , a mobile app that makes music transcription easier than ever. Using artificial intelligence, the app analyzes audio played from guitar, voice, brass or woodwinds and turns it into sheet music. Adopted by thousands of users since launch, the app is available on the iTunes app store and Google Play in a free or subscription-based model.聽
Prof. Richard Stoelzel, Professor of Trumpet and Brass Area Chair at the Schulich School of Music, recently released his latest record 鈥 Horizon. This newest release features many works for trumpet and orchestra that Stoelzel commissioned specifically for the release, and sees him joined by the Polish Camerata Chamber Orchestra. In light of this exciting new disc, we spoke to Prof. Stoelzel about the album, performing as a soloist and more in a recent email exchange.

The Schulich School of Music is pleased to announce the five finalists for the inaugural edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. This new national competition for Canadian composers under the age of 35 was founded by Dr. Graham Sommer,聽MDCM鈥72, (1946-2016),聽a graduate of 成人VR视频鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine and an accomplished pianist and devoted music lover. In this first edition of the competition, five finalists are to compose works for piano quintet (piano and string quartet) which will be judged in front of a live panel.
