Special Seminar - Noriyuki Isobe: Deep-sea plastic pollution and marine-friendly fully biomass-based materials

Monday, June 1, 2026 10:00to11:00
Maass Chemistry Building OM 321, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B8, CA

Abstract | Recent studies have revealed that the deep sea is heavily contaminated with plastic waste, particularly from packaging materials. To address this issue, this seminar will present our
latest research on the development of marine-friendly, fully biomass-based materials, with a specific focus on cellulose and chitin.

Bio | Dr. Noriyuki Isobe is a Senior Researcher at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Environmental Substances and Materials
Research Program. He earned his BS, MS, and PhD in Agricultural and Life Sciences from the University of Tokyo. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Isobe held postdoctoral positions at Universit茅 Grenoble Alpes,
Osaka University, and JAMSTEC before becoming a Researcher in 2020 and advancing to his current role in 2025. His research focuses on biomaterials, particularly polysaccharides, and soft materials
such as gels. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he received the Encouragement Award from the Cellulose Society of Japan in 2022
