Florence Nightingale, a celebrated social reformer and statistician, introduced modern nursing in the Crimea and in London. Gertrude Bell, an English archaeologist, explored Mesopotamia; as 鈥淥riental Secretary鈥 in the 1920s, she played a major role in the creation of Iraq鈥檚 modern borders and infrastructure.
