Congratulations to Dr. Haider Al-Waeli on placing first in the CADR-NCOHR Student Research Competition. His entry 鈥淐hronotherapy of Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) could enhance bone fracture recovery鈥� placed first in the Senior Clinical Science category and was selected for entry in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Competition in London, England in July 2018. Dr. Al-Waeli is currently a PhD student supervised by Dr. Belinda Nicolau and Dr. Faleh Tamimi. His project investigates chronotherapy of NSAIDs. Pain intensity and our ability to heal varies through the day due to an internal day-and-night rhythm that regulates our body. According to this rhythm, most of the healing and recovery happen when we are sleeping, while pain and inflammation are most intense when we are awake. This project can improve the way we manage bone fractures with NSAIDs, for instance the effect of timing the dose of NSAIDs with the body day-night rhythm to maximize the benefits of the drugs and minimize its side effects. Dr. Al-Waeli paper was judged by a panel of 22 dental researchers from across Canada. Reviewers read selected manuscripts and then assigned an overall numerical rating for each application using the criteria applied by the IADR Hatton judging committee.
