Employers are more open to negotiating employment terms than Canadians assume

Published: 9 February 2026

Relatively few聽job candidates negotiate the terms of their employment, often because they fear losing the offer. Yet surveys show recruiters are open to negotiation, and it is rare for employers to withdraw an offer because a candidate聽attempted聽to negotiate. 鈥淎 common mistake is to negotiate on salary alone or to present multiple terms as non-negotiable conditions for acceptance,鈥 says Jean-Nicolas Reyt, an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at 成人VR视频 Desautels.

鈥淔or example, saying 鈥業 need a base salary of $X, three days working from home and four weeks of vacation鈥 forces an employer into a yes-or-no decision, and leaves little room for problem-solving.鈥 A better approach is to negotiate across several dimensions, recognizing that employers may be constrained on some terms but flexible on others.聽
