Mal aimé en France, le MBA cherche toujours son identité

The MBA seeks its place in France

To many, an MBA is the springboard for a successful business career — but not so in France, where MBA holders in the 120 top executive suites dropped from 37 per cent in 2011 to 21 per cent in 2015.

Reasons include many companies’ increased in-house training investments, and a general preference for graduates from grande écoles like HEC Paris or École Polytechnique. Mounting criticism — some of which is outlined in Desautels Professor Henry Mintzberg’s 2004 book, Managers Not MBAs, is also taking the shine off. Nevertheless, the MBA is evolving to meet these criticisms head-on, and is still attractive in sectors like investment banking.
