Professor Hewlin and colleagues awarded over $2m in SSHRC funding

Published: 4 June 2020

Congratulations to Professor Patricia Faison Hewlin and her colleagues across 25 academic institutions who have been awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Grant for the establishment of the "Inclusive Innovation and Entrepreneurship Network (IIE-Net)".

The six-year project, headed by Dr Wendy Cukier at Ryerson University, will further the work of the Ryerson-led Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub to engage in new research on the barriers and enablers to inclusion in the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

With more than 50 academic researchers from 25 institutions, with cross-sectoral representation from 50 partner organizations, this grant will provide the opportunity for researchers to collect and analyze data on the state of innovation and entrepreneurship in Canada.

The grant, totalling almost $2.5 million and representing the largest of its kind administered by SSHRC, will enable Professor Hewlin to research the role of change agents in NGOs, corporations and government agencies that advance opportunities for visible minority, Aboriginal and women business owners. It will also enable her to fund two doctoral students.

"I cannot think of a more appropriate time for the establishment of this initiative that is poised to strengthen Canada's social and economic development," says Professor Hewlin.
