Startups and raises, frank words by James Green
In a recent op-ed for Fortune.com, Magnetic CEO James Green (BMus'86) discusses how to ask for a raise when you work in the sometimes-volatile startup space.
Rather than basing a request on any of the factors that work in a more established company, Mr. Green says to refer to the strengths and direct benefits you bring to the table 鈥 whether you鈥檝e clocked in big-time client upsell or renewal rates, you鈥檝e reduced expenses without degrading performance, or you鈥檝e brought in impressive sales for the quarter.
Rack up your points, then as Mr Green says, 鈥淭he secret is in playing the long game.鈥 Regular meetings with your manager to gauge your performance can play a key part in laying the groundwork for a raise discussion.
