Many plants are capable of rapid, reversible movement. How do rapidly moving plants like the Venus fly trap and touch-me-not move so quickly? We are exploring how interactions between hydraulic cells, vasculature elements, and the epidermis give rise to rapid plant motion. This image is a scanning electron micrograph of vasculature tissue from Mimosa pudica, a rapidly moving plant that folds its leaves in response to touch. [Image by:Â David Sleboda -Â Reza Sharif Lab]
