9am: GUEST SPEAKER – Hospitalization at Home: A potential solution to ED overcrowding?: Nisha Almeida, PhD/ Manager, Health Technology Assessment Unit of the MUHC

Learning objectives: 

1) Understand the current environment of Hospital at Home models (Virtual Care Wards) in Canada and elsewhere, and the technologies used to support them.

2) Learn how to conceptualize an evaluation framework to measure the impact of a Hospital at Home on ED overcrowding.

  1. Design considerations when building a decision-support system.
  2. Current standards in the HIT industry that facilitate the construction of decision-support applications.
  3. Areas of research and development in clinical decision-support systems

11 am – Journal Club, By: Saleh Alsaeed, Pediatric-EMHI fellow

Title: Real-time AI prediction for major adverse cardiac events in emergency department patients with chest pain

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the ability if the AI model in predicting major cardiac events in ED patients with chest pain.
  2. To compare the accuracy of the AI model with the traditional methods for predicting cardiac events.

Question:ÌýWhat are the factors that you would consider when adopting an AI prediction model?

 BIO: Nisha Almeida leads the Health Technology Assessment Unit (TAU) of the MUHC, an advisory group that assists the hospital administration and clinical teams in making evidence-based decisions for the adoption of novel health interventions. Her team of scientists conducts evaluations on the effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of new health interventions or changes in practice, using the best-available scientific evidence. Nisha has a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ.

BIO: Dr. Saleh Alsaeed, health informatics emergency medicine fellow, department of emergency medicine, ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. He is from pediatric background, finished his pediatric medicine board in Saudi Arabia, and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in McMaster prior to being enrolled in his current fellowship. Dr. Saleh has an interest in workflow and human behavior.

Bio: Dr. Bassam Alomar, health informatics emergency medicine fellow, department of emergency medicine, ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. He is from pediatric background, finished his pediatric medicine board and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in Saudi Arabia, worked as a staff for 2 years prior to being enrolled in his current fellowship. Dr. Bassam has an interest in workflow improvement, big data management and machine learning.
