Abstract
Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the third most common diagnosed cancer, accounting for 12% of all new cancer cases in Canada. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were interruptions and delays across the colorectal cancer care pathway from prevention to palliative care. The pandemic revealed the lack of resilience of our healthcare system. To address the impact of COVID-19 on cancer patients, Colorectal Cancer Canada launched the program 鈥淩eady For The Next Round鈥 to find strategies for strengthening health system resilience to respond to future system shocks in the delivery of cancer prevention and care.聽聽
The implementation began with a preliminary literature review followed by a series of four thought-leadership roundtables, each representing the views of four different stakeholder groups (patients, physicians, healthcare system leaders, and researchers) with the aim of proposing solutions across the cancer care continuum. The review was initiated with an environmental search of the current trends in health care resilience and was followed by a focussed literature search of potential solutions by authors. The review was conducted with a set of keywords. Two reviews were done, the first pertaining to all types of cancers and the second specific to colorectal cancer. A total of 1019 articles were reviewed. The results from the review were used as a guide for the roundtables. I contributed to developing agendas, researching the panels, report drafting, and other logistics of the roundtables. The report is expected to be published soon in Current Oncology.聽聽
I was also involved in CCC鈥檚 Immunotherapy program to raise awareness on immunotherapy. The nature of this therapy has brought a paradigm shift in the course of specific colorectal cancer types that were previously incurable. I was responsible for drafting a patient and caregiver guide for Immunotherapy. The guide is expected to be uploaded on the CCC website.聽
The practicum fits within the public health framework because the programs addresses major current public health concerns of colorectal cancer and advocates for potential policy changes and therapeutic advances in making Canadian cancer care more resilient to future crises.聽聽
