A Scoping Review of Teenage Pregnancy and Parenthood in Canada: Practicum Report

Abstract

Background

Teenage pregnancy and parenthood are often considered to be public health concerns because of their strong and persistent correlations with health, education, and poverty. Over the last century, numerous studies have been published on teenage pregnancy and parenthood in Canada. The diverse body of literature on this topic has yet to be systematically reviewed, which limits understanding. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to critically examine the research on teenage pregnancy and parenthood in Canada and identify gaps in that research.

Methods

A search to identify literature on teenage pregnancy and parenthood in Canada was conducted in six databases: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycInfo, and Google Scholar. Following title and abstract review, the full text of all studies brought forward were read by two independent reviewers to determine their eligibility for inclusion. Relevant information was extracted from all included studies and stored in an Excel spreadsheet.

Discussion

The manuscript was not completed within the limited timeframe of my practicum. Therefore, detailed results, conclusions, implications, and recommendations are not presently available. Next steps for the completion of this project include finishing data extraction, performing a narrative synthesis, and writing the manuscript.
