Liver diseases are extremely common affecting 1 in 4 Canadian. Once advanced liver disease develops, portal hypertension becomes the main driver of severe complications and death. Unfortunately, the currently available diagnostic tools are invasive, costly, and can even miss patients with portal hypertension. As a clinician-investigator, my research will focus on developing and validating new approaches that can improve the diagnosis of this condition by conducting high quality clinical trials. I am interested both in evaluating both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tools. I will also address critical issues rooted in whole-person care, such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty. These issues are well-known to be common in patients with advanced liver disease and are associated with worse outcomes
