Meet Our New Communications Assistant Diana Berry: Bridging Science and Communication

Poised to bridge the gap between intricate cancer research and effective public communication, The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) welcomes Diana Berry as our newest Communications Assistant.

Diana is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Biochemistry under the mentorship of Prof. Ian Watson. Her research focuses on deciphering melanoma's response to immunotherapy drugs. 鈥Specifically, I study a mechanism which we think allows a subtype of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, to respond exceptionally well to immunotherapy,鈥 shares Diana. The implications of her work could potentially extend beyond melanoma, offering new hope in the fight against various cancers that share similar immune vulnerabilities.

A Passion for Science Communication

Diana鈥檚 journey to this pivotal position was paved with a passion for scientific communication. She's volunteered with initiatives such as the CCS Montreal Research Information Outreach Team and Young Women in Bio, where her dedication to fostering effective scientific communication took root. The role at GCI, with its unique blend of opportunities, offered her a fresh canvas to apply her skills: 鈥When I heard about the role, it sounded like an excellent opportunity to use my existing experience in a new context where I can learn from the different types of communication initiatives at the GCI.

A Vision for the Future of Science Comms at the GCI

As Diana settles into her role, she's brimming with optimism and vision. She's determined to share the remarkable research taking place at GCI, raising awareness of our achievements within the Montreal and Canadian research communities. She aims to showcase our research beyond the laboratory doors of the GCI. 鈥I鈥檓 looking forward to focusing on the important real-world implications of the basic science as well as the pre-clinical research that occurs at the GCI. Additionally, I hope to highlight aspects of how the scientific process works from bench to bedside, and where various GCI researchers fit along this process.鈥 Diana firmly believes that imagining herself as an audience member ensures that the information she conveys strikes the right balance between depth and clarity. When asked about specific projects she's eager to tackle, Diana is excited to craft engaging video content that spotlights GCI's publications and the dynamic discoveries of our research teams. By venturing into more visually captivating mediums, she aims to make complex scientific findings accessible and intriguing to a wider audience.

Diana鈥檚 dedication to effective science communication, her passion for discovery, and her commitment to our mission make her an invaluable addition to our team. Welcome to the team, Diana!
