Frequently Asked Questions

Course Registration and Minerva Waitlists

Detailed instructions on how to use the Minerva registration menu and how to operate Minerva waitlists can be found on the Courses and Programs website, along with a list of common registration error messages and how to resolve them.

What courses should I be taking in my first year at 成人VR视频?

U0 students should register for courses to complete their Foundation year program requirements. In BSc and BA&Sc degrees, this program is managed by your assigned Degree advisor who is based at the Science Office for Undergraduate Advising (SOUSA). In degrees, the program is managed by the Foundation year/U0 advisor at Arts Office of Advising and Student Information Services (OASIS). U1 students can start taking classes for their major(s) and minor(s). U1 students typically take 200-level courses and a few 300-level courses, whether they be required, complementary or elective courses. First year is a good time to explore disciplines, especially if you are unsure what program(s) you wish to complete during your studies.

A course I was hoping to register for is full, what should I do?

Registration as a first year student can be stressful as many courses may already be full once you gain access to the registration menu, but keep in mind you will have until the end of the course add/drop period聽each semester to finalize your course schedule. As there is a large amount of turnover in enrollment numbers for first year courses during this period, you may still have good chances of getting a seat in the course if you keep a close eye on Minerva over the summer months, and as courses begin in September, and in January. At the start of registration, look for classes that can count towards your degree that may still have room for you to register, so you have something else to fall back on in the event it doesn't work out with your preferred classes. It is not a problem to focus more heavily on your other program(s) in your first year, or to take come electives courses to help fill your schedule. Each year, you will have an earlier pick at registration, meaning registration will become progressively easier as you progress with the degree! If in doubt, don't hesitate to contact Department advisors for guidance.

How do I register for a course that has an active Minerva waitlist?

If a course has an active Minerva waitlist, you will not be able to register for the course directly; you will first need to add yourself to the Minerva waitlist once a space becomes available in order to be invited to register once spaces free up in the course. Once you add yourself to a waitlist, monitor your 成人VR视频 email daily so as not to miss the invitation to register once it is sent out as you will only have a day or less to register. If you do not respond by the deadline indicated in the invitation to register email, you will be bumped off the waitlist and the spot will be offered to the next person in line. If this is the case, you will need to start over from the back of the queue and hope for the best. Departments do not typically bypass the Minerva waitlist system. Access the Minerva Waitlist webpage for detailed instructions and more information about the waitlist system.

When do I register for courses for the winter term?

You should register for both the fall and winter terms at the same time, on the opening dates of registration for your class year in the spring. Access more information on registration dates for returning and new students on the Courses and Programs website. Students may continue to modify their course selection for each term up until the course add/drop deadlines for the term in question.

Where can I find up to date program information and course lists?

You can find up to date program information in the University聽, or see our Department website for the complete list of programs we offer by degree type聽and direct links to the course requirements in the Course Catalogue (click on the "Courses" tab on the program page in the Catalogue to view the course requirements).聽A complete list of classes offered by the Department can also be found on our website's course pages.

I have questions about registration for GEOG courses, or degree planning questions about my Geography program. Who can I talk to for assistance?

When in doubt, email your questions to the Geography Program Advisor Michelle Maillet at advisor.geog [at] mcgill.ca, drop by her office during office hours or with her to go over your questions together. Michelle is responsible for all undergraduate programs that fall under the Department of Geography (including majors, minors, honours, joint honours, and Interfaculty programs). She holds a wealth of knowledge about navigating the 成人VR视频 bureaucracy and can help you be strategic with your undergraduate studies. Do not hesitate to contact her for any Geography-related or general questions that you may have. If she is not the right person to answer your question, she can connect you with the appropriate person/office.

For general registration issues and room bookings, you may also contact our Undergraduate Coordinator at undergrad.geog [at] mcgill.ca for assistance.

Credit exemptions

A credit exemption may be granted if you have completed a course at another institution that is deemed equivalent to a 成人VR视频 course. Pre-admission advanced standing credit exemptions that are not completed at a University however cannot be counted towards honours, majors or minors in Geography. Students who receive credit exemptions from CEGEP, Advanced Placement, A-levels, International Bacc, or French Bacc are required to replace these requirements in their programs with other classes taken at a university. Your advisor.geog [at] mcgill.ca (program advisor) can help identify suitable alternatives.

I am a newly admitted student with CEGEP, AP, A-levels, IB, or French Bacc advanced standing credit. How do I know if I have credit exemptions and when will these be added to my 成人VR视频 record?

The 成人VR视频 office will record your transfer credits on your 成人VR视频 transcript by October, though in most cases the information will be processed during the summer and prior to starting classes where the following five conditions are met:

  • you have confirmed your offer in a program at 成人VR视频
  • your CEGEP, university or exam board has provided us proof of official results (often not until July or August)
  • the course is listed on one of the sub-pages of the "Prospective and newly admitted students" page of this website, and is pre-approved for credit (subject to change)
  • the course is counted towards your degree
  • you passed the course with the required minimum grade or better (see individual pages for details)

You can see your transfer credit(s) at the top of your "Unofficial Transcript" in Minerva, under the "Student Records" menu.

Note: In general, students can claim up to 30 credits worth of exemptions.

I completed courses at another university prior to admission at 成人VR视频. Can I receive transfer credits and use these courses towards my program requirements?

Up to 1/3 of each programs' requirements (Majors, Minors, Honours, Joint Honours and Interfaculty programs) can be fulfilled using university transfer credit (i.e. courses competed at another University). Courses for programs must be taken at the 200-level or above, and student must verify with each聽advisor.geog [at] mcgill.ca (program advisor) to confirm which course(s) can be integrated in your programs. University transfer credits include both courses completed prior to your admission to 成人VR视频 (if declared in your 成人VR视频 package) as well as courses taken abroad during a university exchange after admission.

Access the transfer credit policies for BA, BSc and BA&Sc degrees for more information on transfer credit course requirements and restrictions.

Note: To qualify for a 成人VR视频 degree, a minimum of 60 credits out of the 120 needed to earn the undergraduate degree must be completed at 成人VR视频.

Course overlap

You may notice that certain courses appear in multiple programs across the Faculties of Arts and Science. However, given double counting of courses between programs is not permitted in BA, BSc and BA&Sc degrees. When enrolled in programs that have overlapping requirements, students must consult both program advisors to help resolve the conflict. For required courses, the usual resolution is one of the two programs will use the overlapping class, and in the other the advisor will help you find a suitable alternative to ensure there is no overlap. For complementary course options, the approach is simply to remember that there can be no overlap and pick different classes form the list of options for both programs.聽If you are in unsure how to navigate program overlap, do not hesitate to contact your Program and Faculty Advisors for case-specific guidance.

Statistics Course Overlap

Credit for statistics courses for Arts, Science, and Bachelor of Arts and Science students will be given with the following stipulations:

  • Credit will be given for only one of the following introductory statistics courses:听,听,听,听,听, ,听,听,听,听,听.
  • Students who have already received credit for 听飞颈濒濒 not receive credit for any introductory statistics class listed in the point above.
  • Credit will be given for only one of the following intermediate statistics courses:听,听,听, , , , .

For more information regarding the Statistics course overlap policies at 成人VR视频, and how this may affect your program requirements and course selection, see your Department Advisor for case-specific guidance.
