Program Description
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Animal Science offered by the Department of Animal Science in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes intensive and innovative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in experimental design, critical reading, and academic writing to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.
The program is also available as the following option:
Bioinformatics option: provides training for students interested in bioinformatics research which lies at the intersection of biological/medical sciences and mathematics/computer science/engineering.

Unique Program Features
- Student benefit from access to the Macdonald Campus Farm which includes the Dairy Cattle Complex, the Swine Complex, and the Donald McQueen Shaver Poultry Complex;
- Additional access to research and experimental labs such as Lactanet – Canadian Dairy Production Centre of Expertise, the Crampton Nutrition Lab, the Large Animal Research Unit (LARU), and the small animal research unit (SARU);
- Students in the Bioninformatics option train to become researchers focusing on the development of strategies for experimental design, the construction of tools to analyze datasets, the application of modelling techniques, the creation of tools for manipulating bioinformatics data, the integration of biological databases, and the use of algorithms and statistics.

- An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
- English-language proficiency
