Dr. Ashley Stew will talk about her book Against Technoabelism. This presentation will be followed with an audience Q and A.

Against Technoableism is a manifesto exploding what we think we know about disability, and arguing that disabled people are the real experts when it comes to technology and disability.

When bioethicist and professor Ashley Shew became a self-described 鈥渉ard-of-hearing chemobrained amputee with Crohn鈥檚 disease and tinnitus,鈥 there was no returning to 鈥渘ormal.鈥 Suddenly well-meaning people called her an 鈥渋nspiration鈥 while grocery shopping, or viewed her as a needy recipient of technological wizardry. Most disabled people don鈥檛 want what the abled assume they want鈥攏or are they generally asked. Why do abled people frame disability as an individual problem that calls for technological solutions, rather than a social one?

In a warm, feisty, opinionated voice and vibrant prose, Shew shows how we can create better narratives and more accessible futures by drawing from the insights of the cross-disability community. For the future is surely disabled鈥攚hether through changing climate, new diseases, or even through space travel. It鈥檚 time we looked closely at how we all think about disability technologies and learn to envision disabilities not as liabilities, but as skill sets enabling all of us to navigate a challenging world.

This event is also part of the 6th Season of Disrupting Disruptions: the Feminist and Accessible Publishing and Communications Technologies Speaker and Workshop Series (), organized by Dr. Alex Ketchum. Our series was made possible thanks to our sponsors: SSHRC, Digital Citizen Research, the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF), the DIGS Lab, Milieux, Initiative for Indigenous Futures, ReQEF, and more (see our website!)
