The popular course 鈥淧atient Centred Care in Action: An Interprofessional Approach鈥� returns this winter along with a new course, 鈥淢anaging Interprofessional Conflict,鈥� as the Office of Interprofessional Education (OIPE) seeks facilitators from across the health professions to guide students in these learning activities.

Patient Centred Care in Action: An Interprofessional Approach
In this course, students engage in simulation activities that focus on patient/client/family/community-centred care while building on prior knowledge and experience of role clarification, interprofessional communication and teamwork. This course includes students from various healthcare programs along with actors portraying the patient and family perspective in role-play activities.
Facilitators of this course can choose to sign up for one or several sessions between February 1 and March 11. Facilitators will attend a remote training workshop, guide and support a small interprofessional student group via Zoom, and participate in a debrief session among all facilitators at the end of the session. Managing Interprofessional Conflict
In this new course, students will be introduced to the competency of interprofessional conflict resolution in order to engage collaboratively and intentionally when addressing disagreements or conflicts within an interprofessional healthcare team. This course includes students from various healthcare programs.
The course takes place between March 12 and April 3, with facilitators taking on the role of 鈥済uide on the side鈥� to support student discussion and reflection as well as sharing their own experiences and guiding two small online groups of students. Interprofessional Education Pivots Amidst Pandemic
The OIPE has had to revise all course and facilitator materials amidst the pandemic, striving for a seamless transition to train over 700 learners in interprofessional education.
The OIPE team has been preparing since the summer to reimagine how the IPE courses could be delivered remotely without compromising the pedagogical principles of interactive, small group, experiential learning. Teaching and Learning Services and the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning have been instrumental in assisting the OIPE to adapt the courses.
Students will continue to come together online in small groups to work on case-based scenarios facilitated by academic and clinical faculty. OIPE is integrating students from social work into the program this year and has been working with Campus Outaouais to launch interprofessional education courses in French.
Early studies and anecdotal reports on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on team functioning highlights the importance of collaboration, complementarity, flexibility and overlap in roles when faced with a sustained crisis situation, notes Dr. Purden.
鈥淭eams that demonstrated these competencies appeared to be better equipped to manage the situation and sustain the effort needed to respond and adapt to this prolonged challenge,鈥� says Dr. Purden.
