Leadership in Law: In Conversation with Joel Unruch, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Accenture
After what has been a tumultuous year, join us to hear insights from Joel Unruch, BCL/LLB’03, in a conversation moderated by Joydeep Sengupta, BCL/LLB'08, about how the legal world has adapted and the dynamic role played by leadership. The conversation will also explore Joel’s career journey, leading in crisis, and building a more inclusive work environment.
Now both well established in their respective careers, the pair will offer personal anecdotes about their own professional experiences, as well as their insights and advice for young lawyers and law students.
Welcome remarks will be provided by Professor Allison Christians, Associate Dean (Research) and H. Heward Stikeman Chair in the Law of Taxation at the ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Faculty of Law.

The speakers
Joel Unruch, BCL/LLB'03, is Accenture's general counsel and corporate secretary, responsible for leading the company's global legal function. With ultimate oversight for all legal support to Accenture, Joel leads a global team of legal, contract management and government relations professionals. He is also a member of Accenture's Global Management Committee. Joel joined Accenture in 2011 as assistant general counsel and assistant secretary and became corporate secretary in June 2015. In addition to his responsibilities as corporate secretary, Joel oversaw ventures & acquisitions for legal, which includes global acquisitions, dispositions and strategic minority investments. He also led the legal organization's alliances & ecosystems practice, which drives growth through Accenture's strategic relationships with partners and suppliers, and led the Global Legal Network-a team that delivers a comprehensive suite of legal services.
Admitted to the Paris, New York and Ontario (Canada) Bars, Joydeep Sengupta, BCL/LLB'08, is a member of the Compliance, Investigations and Regulatory team of Mayer Brown's Paris office, within the Litigation and Dispute Resolution department. Joydeep focuses on cross-border litigation, compliance and enforcement matters for financial institutions and corporations, including the resolution of administrative and enforcement proceedings involving regulators and prosecutors. Joydeep has worked in the New York, Paris and Washington, DC offices of global law firms, and has served as a law clerk at the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Toronto. His work on legal innovation was featured in the most recent Financial Times - Innovative Lawyers North America report. Joydeep has also been shortlisted by Chambers Europe in 2021 for an Outstanding Contribution award for his work on promoting greater inclusion in the legal profession in Europepdiv>
