Daniel Weinstock appointed to the Order of Canada

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Daniel Weinstock, CM, has been named a member of the Order of Canada. His appointment was announced by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, on 30 June.

The cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. Professor Weinstock was honoured for 鈥渉is exemplary contributions to the advancement of political philosophy, public policy and social justice in Canada, as a renowned ethicist, philosopher and public intellectual.鈥

Daniel Weinstock is a world-leading ethicist and philosopher who has made exceptional contributions to the advancement of public policy and social justice in Canada and abroad. A full professor, he has been associate dean (research) at the Faculty of Law since 2021, and the holder of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy in the Faculties of Law and of Arts since 2020.

From 2013 to 2020, he was at the helm of 成人VR视频鈥檚 prestigious Institute for Health and Social Policy. This interdisciplinary research unit brings together legal scholars, social and natural scientists, and humanists to increase knowledge of public policy-making processes and the ways that policies affect human health and well-being.

Professor Daniel Weinstock's research interests have spanned widely across a range of topics in contemporary moral and political philosophy 鈥 from the just management of ethnocultural and religious diversity in modern liberal democracies, to state policy with respect to children, families, and educational institutions.

He has been an active participant in public policy in Quebec, having been from 1997 to 1999 a member of a Ministry of Education working group on religion in public schools, and from 2003 to 2008, the founding director of Quebec鈥檚 Public Health Ethics Committee.
