TITLE / TITRE Can AI develop true reasoning skills? (A pure mathematician's perspective.)

ABSTRACT /听R脡SUM脡

The biggest quest in modern mathematical sciences is to attain "Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI). Literally trillions of dollars are being raised to aid in the quest for AGI and so surely it should be clear that such a lofty goal is feasible. To hear the AI companies you would think it will happen any day now...
The consensus has become that if an AI can perform true mathematical reasoning, then it is probably only a question of modification to perform reasoning in any domain, so the focus is on mathematics, and problem solving skills, like questions from the latest International Mathematical Olympiads.
What little appears so far in this abstract should provoke questions, disagreements, perhaps even contempt!
In this talk we will investigate these themes, discussing what (mathematical) research is, and how this resonates with the AI community's perception.
