Alexey Shafirov Wins the 2024–2025 Classical Concerto Competition

The Schulich School of Music is thrilled to congratulate pianist Alexey Shafirov on winning the 2024–2025 Classical Concerto Competition!

For over a decade, the competition has showcased outstanding musical talent and given the first prize winner the distinguished opportunity to perform with the ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Symphony Orchestra. Alexey will perform with the ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ Symphony Orchestra on April 5, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. in Salle Pierre-Mercure.Ìý

On Sunday, November 17, six finalists from the preliminary instrument area rounds performed their concertos at Redpath Hall before an audience and the jury, consisting of Alexis Hauser, Simon Aldrich, David Stewart, Kyoko Hashimoto, Richard Stoelzel.

A doctoral student at the Schulich School of Music, Alexey studies under the tutelage of professors Michael McMahon and Ilya Poletaev. His commanding performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C major, K 467, supported by his collaborative pianist for the competition Chris Soong, captured the jury’s attention. This remarkable achievement adds to Alexey’s growing list of accolades, including his recent win of the 2023-2024 Romantic/Contemporary Concerto Competition.Ìý

Alexey’s prize for winning the 2023-2024 competition will see him perform at the Maison symphonique on Friday, February 28, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.
