Current research:

My dissertation examines perceptual notions of brightness and darkness in orchestration. In particular, I am interested in how composers construct meaning in orchestral music using instrumental colour as a basic dark-to-bright syntax. Furthermore, I study how listeners might interpret these timbral codes, if at all, and how this composer-listener timbral interaction is based on our human auditory system. This research informs my own artistic approach to timbre in compositions for ensembles ranging from solos and duos, up to and including orchestral works.
