Published: 30 June 2020

The Department of Pediatrics would like to introduce our newest members, Dr. Matthew Donlan and Dr. Helena Evangeliou.

Dr. Matthew Donlan was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Pediatrics.

鈥淗ello to the Montreal Children鈥檚 Family! Many of you may remember me from my time as a pediatric resident and then pediatric critical care fellow at the old site from 2006-2011. After my time there I spent a year learning cardiac critical care at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and then practicing as an intensivist in Quebec City. Life throws curveballs sometimes, though, and after our second son was born unintentionally on our living room floor (great story, you鈥檒l have to ask me about it, and he鈥檚 6 and fine now), we decided to move closer to my family in the Ottawa area. That took me out of the PICU, but gave me a new challenge in General Pediatrics at CISSS de l鈥橭utaouais in Gatineau. I continued to locum for several years in many PICUs across the country, but ultimately stopped a little over a year ago. I鈥檝e worked in a lot of hospitals, in many different contexts, and I hope that I can bring some of my experiences back to The Children鈥檚. My wife Melanie and I are very much looking forward to coming back, and we can鈥檛 wait to work with you all again!鈥

Dr. Helena Evangeliou was聽appointed as Assistant Professor in the Division of General Pediatrics.

鈥淚 am thrilled to be reunited with the MCH family after a few years of adventures that included an ID fellowship, some travels, an MBA and a baby! After completing medical school and general pediatric residency at 成人VR视频, I pursued subspecialty training in Infectious diseases at the CHU Sainte-Justine and locumed for some of Quebec鈥檚 Northern Cree communities while also working in Montreal.

Motivated by a desire to improve various aspects of patient care but feeling ill-equipped to do so, I decided to pursue an MBA at HEC Montreal before beginning as a staff academic pediatrician at Sainte-Justine in 2017. During my master鈥檚, I focused primarily on process improvement and change management, which allowed me to promote a more rigorous QI-approach to tackling quality and stewardship issues on the inpatient wards. In particular, I led a multi-disciplinary team of ED and ward clinicians in a project to reduce the use of IV hydration in favor of NG for inpatients with bronchiolitis. I was also co-lead of a patient flow committee aimed at identifying barriers to timely discharge from the pediatric ward. I look forward to collaborating with dynamic MCH colleagues on a multitude of operational and academic QI initiatives during this pandemic and beyond!

My free time is spent playing outdoors as much as possible with my super active husband Peter and fun-loving 21-month old daughter Mia (will be 2 in September鈥). As a family we鈥檝e climbed mountains and volcanoes, gone sailing and biking. We love traveling but we鈥檙e just as much looking forward to exploring Quebec and Canada over the next few months/ years!鈥
