In the last 10 years, POP has been involved in many research projects to study the effects of multimodal intervention to enhance functional recovery after various types of surgery.Ìý The Pop Team continues to refine the techniques used to develop the most efficient and effective way of delivering the multimodal program to continually try to improve patient outcomes

Completed Studies

Colorectal Surgery

Multimodal Intervention to Enhance Functional Recovery after Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized Control Trial

A research study to determine the effects of a multimodal intervention, consisting of an exercise program, nutritional and relaxation counselling, given to patients prior to surgery (prehabilitation) or after surgery (rehabilitation), to determine which methodology was most effective in enhancing the functional recovery of patients.

Surgical Prehabilitation of Cancer Patients Undergoing Colorectal Resection. Modalities to Mitigate the Level of Anxiety and Depression Prior to Surgery: A Cohort Study

A research study to determine the effects of a multimodal intervention, consisting of an exercise program, nutritional and psychosocial counselling, given to patients prior to surgery (prehabilitation) focusing on mitigating the effects of anxiety and/or depression on the patient outcomes after surgery.

Multimodal Intervention to Enhance Functional Recovery after Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized Control Trial

A research study to determine the effects of a multimodal intervention, consisting of an exercise program, nutritional (supplementation) and relaxation counselling, given to patients prior to surgery (prehabilitation) or after surgery (rehabilitation) with the addition of an intra-op supervised exercise program for patients while in hospital post-surgery, to determine whether an additional intra-op exercise program was more effective in enhancing the functional recovery of patients.

Multimodal Intervention to Enhance Functional Recovery after Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized Control Trial

A research study to determine the effects of a multimodal intervention, consisting of an exercise program, nutritional and relaxation counselling, given to patients prior to surgery (prehabilitation) or after surgery (rehabilitation) with the addition of a modified intra-op supervised exercise program for patients while in hospital post-surgery, to determine whether an additional intra-op exercise program was more effective in enhancing the functional recovery of patients.

Multimodal Intervention to Enhance Functional Recovery after Colorectal Surgery: A Randomized Control Trial

The purpose of this study was to find what is the best solution for this operation by performing preoperatively either vigorous or moderate intensity training exercise: exercise that may help patients to move and breathe better, giving a nutritional supplement to provide more physical strength and, providing relaxation and anti-anxiety techniques to cope with the stress of surgery.Ìý The study focused on the impact of these interventions on functional exercise capacity and insulin sensitivity before and after surgery.

Multimodal Intervention: The role of nutrition in enhancing post-operative recovery

The main purpose of the study was to determine the best solution to enhance recovery after surgery by either giving patients nutritional counselling or by giving them nutritional counselling with protein supplementation before surgery (prehabilitation).Ìý The study focused on the impact of this intervention on exercise functionality before and after surgery.

Lung

Multimodal Intervention to Enhance Functional Recovery after Lung Surgery: A Randomized Control Trial

The main purpose of the study was to determine to what extent aerobic and resistance exercise, nutritional supplementation and psychological coping strategies, initiated before surgery and continued after surgery or initiated after surgery, optimizes the recovery of functional walking capacity following lung resection for cancer.

Knee and Hip Arthroplasty

Prehabilitation for Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: Understanding the Role of Inflammation in Modulating Functional Capacity and Recovery

The purpose of the study was to determine whether exercise before versus post-surgery improved recovery following total hip or knee replacement.Ìý Patients were asked to participate in a moderate-intensity home-based exercise program under the direction of the kinesiologist that was designed specifically for patients with osteoarthritis requiring total hip or knee replacement.Ìý The effects of exercise on inflammation, mode and hormones was also studied.

Cystectomy (Bladder)

Prehabilitation to enhance postoperative functional capacity following radical cystectomy: combining physical exercise to stress reduction strategies and nutritional supplementation

The purpose of the study was to find the best solution to speed recovery from this operation by performing the following procedures:

  1. Giving nutritional advice to boost the body’s nutrient reserves
  2. Determining whether including physical exercise provides additional help for recovery or not
  3. Giving relaxation strategies (such as deep breathing)

Prostate

Prehabilitation Program for Prostate Cancer Surgery

The purpose of the study was to examine whether exercise introduced prior to surgery (prehabilitation) would or would not improve the physical and psychological well-being of the patient with prostate cancer undergoing surgery.Ìý The evaluation of prehabilitation will assist in developing future programs aimed at reducing the side effects of prostate cancer treatment.

Esophageal

Research Project:Ìý Adding physical exercise to nutrition to enhance postoperative funcational capacity following esophageal resection

The purpose of this study was to find the best solution to speed recovery for this operation by performing the following procedures:

  1. Giving nutritional advice to boost the patient’s body nutrient reserves
  2. Determining whether including physical exercise provides additional help for recovery or not

Ongoing Studies

Frailty

Using multimodal prehabilitation to improve outcomes for frail patients undergoing resection of colorectal cancer

The purpose of the study if to find the most efficient way to recuperate strength and energy after surgery.Ìý To do so, we will observe if, in elderly patients, a program of physical exercise, nutrition supplements and relaxation techniques has better results whether it is started before or after surgery.Ìý In this study, we look at the number and severity of complications that may occur as a result of surgery.

Colorectal-International Multicenter

Multimodal prehabilitation in colorectal cancer patients to improve functional capacity and reduce postoperative complications

The purpose of the study is to find out whether a program, which includes exercise together with food supplementations and relaxation techniques before surgery, helps the patient to move and breathe better, cope with stress of surgery and recover faster than a typical routine physical activity and food intake the patient normally does.Ìý At this point, we are not sure if this intervention helps to heal better after surgery.Ìý The focus is on the impact of these interventions on postoperative return to normal activities of daily living and post-surgical complications.
