Recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and Russia鈥檚 war in Ukraine, have brought agricultural and food supplies to the forefront of policy conversations. Many people believe that ensuring a fairer, more sustainable, and secure foodscape will require a bolstering of domestic food systems, and they are critical of the hegemonic neoliberal policies that have encouraged trade liberalization in agriculture.
This talk will explore how Canada鈥檚 system of supply management in the dairy, egg, and poultry sectors has served as a bulwark against neoliberal policies and how, by generally supporting the system, Canadian governments and citizens have accepted the idea that the state has an important role to play in sustaining rural populations, supporting family farms, and provisioning Canadians with local, affordable, and stable food supplies.
Jodey Nurse is the faculty lecturer in 成人VR视频鈥檚 Canadian Studies program.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and reception.
