Montreal Neurological Institute - New Cyclotron

Type: Construction / Status: Validation

In 1981, the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital – The Neuro, became the first medical institution in Canada to be equipped with its own isotope production facility: THE CYCLOTRON. The move to include such a facility within its walls was somewhat revolutionary at the time.

By producing its own radioactive tracers used for Positron Emission Tomography(PET)imaging, The Neuro enabled researchers to uncover the mysteries of how the brain works and clinicians to increase the speed and accuracy of patients diagnosis and treatments.

Today, medical cyclotrons are found in cities across the country and isotopes are used around the world for research, and cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Project Description:

This project involves installing a new cyclotron to the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital to secure a supply of fluorodeoxyglucose, which might includes the relocalization of the electrical and the mechanical services. A feasibility study is required first.

Project Scope:

This project involves installing a new cyclotron for the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital. Given the complexity of this installation, feasibility studies are required to determine the path forward for the project. The current study involves replacing the existing cyclotron in its current location. Other options and alternate locations may also be studied.
