³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ is actively addressing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions challenge, primarily driven by building energy consumption, notably natural gas for heating across its campuses. Alongside this, significant emissions also arise from air travel, daily commuting, and the University’s vehicle fleet.
The downtown campus, due to its extensive building infrastructure and high concentration of energy-intensive research labs, accounts for 90% of ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ’s total energy emissions.
As part of ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ’s Climate and Sustainability Strategy 2020 – 2025, a pivotal goal is achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. This ambitious target aims for net-zero GHG emissions through strategic actions, including initiatives led by Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS).
Recent assessments show progress, with a 23% reduction in GHG emissions compared to 2015 levels by 2020. Notably, natural gas consumption in buildings decreased by 9% in 2020 from the previous year, attributed to factors like smart energy grids, warmer weather, and reduced campus activity during the pandemic.
Since 2002-2003, ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ has successfully reduced building-related GHG emissions by 34%, underscoring significant advancements towards its sustainability objectives.

Natural gas molecule contract for ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ. Total annual volume purchased is approximately 500,000 GJ.
The term of the contract will be thirty-six (36) months from the effective date. The contract may be extended for up to two (2) twelve (12) month periods, for a maximum term of sixty (60) months, at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ's sole discretion.
