Abstract:ÌýNeurons rely on short pulses of electricity called action potentials (or spikes) to encode information. Whether neurons code using the rate or timing of their spikes has been much debated. In my talk, I will explain how a set of neurons can combine (or multiplex) rate and temporal coding using differentially synchronized spikes. I will also demonstrate that spike synchrony is important for sensation as revealed by the presence or absence of paresthesia during spinal cord stimulation at different frequencies. This and other results speak to the importance of neuron excitability – how ion channels interact to control spike generation. Using optogenetic experiments, I will discuss how axon excitability is optimized for reliable spike propagation. Lastly, I will discuss the challenges of regulating excitability by adjusting various ion channel densities.
