Big federal funding for FMHS cancer prevention research

Part of the largest CIHR-led cancer prevention investment, 成人VR视频 researchers will develop approaches to reduce cancer risk and improve early detection

Four 成人VR视频 researchers have received听$7.9 million听total in听funding from the听Canadian Institutes of Health听Research (CIHR)听and partners听through听the听Bringing Biology to Cancer Prevention Team Grants program,听听by听the听Honourable听Marjorie Michel, Canada鈥檚 Minister of Health.

Over $41 million in听funding听was announced to听support 19 teams that will work over the next five years to develop and share听new approaches听that support cancer prevention, reduce cancer risk, and improve early detection for some of the听most commonly diagnosed听cancers in Canada and the world.

The funding听is led by CIHR in partnership with the Terry Fox Research Institute, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, the Cancer Research Society, and听BioCanRx.听It is the single largest CIHR-led investment in cancer prevention research to date.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and it is estimated to cost the health care system, patients, and families听nearly听$37.7 billion听every year. Up to 40% of cancer cases could be prevented through changes in lifestyle and environmental factors, including听prevention strategies听and听early听detection.

鈥淩esearch can save lives and reduce the burden of cancer. Scientists, clinicians, trainees, survivors, families, cancer advocates, and others all have a role to play. When one of us succeeds, we all听benefit听from that success,鈥 said听Honourable听Marjorie Michel. 鈥淭oday鈥檚 announcement is a great example of how by working together across countries, and across disciplines, we can build a stronger, more resilient, and healthier Canada.鈥
