How to decide between an academic and nonacademic career

December 9th - 12th, 12pm - 12:45pm (online)

PhDs work wherever smart people are needed. In today’s creative economy, a faculty career isn’t the only option for PhDs who are seeking engaging and rewarding work.

But what career pathway will be right for YOU?

This special workshop series is designed to walk doctoral students, PhDs and postdocs through a series of exercises to help them evaluate career options and identify next steps in building their career either as faculty or beyond the professoriate.

During the series we’ll talk about:

  • December 9 – Introduction to Optimal Career Pathway/Career Satisfaction
  • December 10 – How to identify your values
  • December 11 – How to identify your most marketable skills
  • December 12 – How to research career options best suited for you

Who should attend: This series is uniquely designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering: Is a faculty career path right for me? What other career options are available to PhDs in my discipline?

Networking but not landing interviews?

December 11th, 2pm - 2:30pm

Are you networking on LinkedIn but feel like it’s not going anywhere? Are your connections not responding, or sharing job opportunities?

One of the most common mistakes we see master’s students make in their job search is engaging in passive versus active networking.

Networking isn’t just about collecting LinkedIn connections or posting on social media; it’s about cultivating meaningful relationships and engaging with others. Active networking involves proactively reaching out, attending events, joining professional associations, and participating in targeted conversations to expand your network.

Join us for this virtual workshop designed for master’s students from all disciplines who are wondering:

  • What’s the difference between active and passive networking?
  • Why engaging in strategic, active networking is key to advancing your career.
  • Strategies for overcoming common barriers to active networking, including fear of rejection or time constraints.
  • How to leverage technology and social media platforms as catalysts for active networking, rather than passive observation.
