Meet Tony

Tony Mittermaier

Anthony (Tony) Mittermaier obtained his B.Sc. in biophysics at the University of Guelph and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Toronto. He has been a member of ³ÉÈËVRÊÓƵ’s Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science since 2005, where he is currently a full professor.

His cutting-edge research blends biophysical techniques, such as calorimetry and NMR spectroscopy, to explore fundamental molecular mechanisms that govern protein and nucleic acid function. His work also extends to drug design, aiming to uncover critical insights into biomolecular interactions at the atomic level. Additionally, Tony leads a laboratory focused on biomolecular structure, function, and dynamics, where new tools are developed to advance our understanding of biological macromolecules. In recognition of his contributions to chemical biology, he was awarded the Chemical Biology/Medicinal Chemistry Lectureship award by the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2021.

From 2020-2024, Tony served as Associate Dean (Student Affairs) in the Faculty of Science, where he championed student wellbeing and academic success.

Tony has served as Dean of Students since 2024 and will continue in that role while acting as Interim Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning).
