This young man presented with intermittant fever on his return from Ethiopia. These strange objects were seen on the thin smear.

Diagnosis:

These are microgametes of Plasmodium ovale. They are at times seen in periferal smears when the pH, and other features of the collected EDTA antcoagulated blood stimulate or allow such exflagellation. They should not be confused with Borrelia recurrentis.
