March 18, 2016 -听Perspectives / Perceptions -听A Fridge Door Gallery Vernissage
It seems almost clich茅 to ask the age-old, ultimately rhetorical question, 鈥淲hat is art?鈥, and yet we continuously find ourselves in situations where we are confronted with a piece of work that turns our entire worldview totally on its head. In a general sense, it is safe to say that art deals with representation, and that representations are never pure reflections of reality. From documentary photographs to abstract paintings, works of art are always mediated by something, demonstrating varying degrees of separation from the real. Art thus provides us with infinite possibilities for envisioning the world around us, and artists have consistently been charged with the responsibility of challenging the accepted methods of representation. If we have learned anything from art history, it is that artistic representation refuses definition and avoids generalization. You never know what to expect.听
In choosing the pieces for this exhibition, we looked for artists that continue to challenge how we perceive reality, art, and ourselves through their own unique artistic perspectives. Michael Rozen and Alejanda Morales present different ways of envisioning urban spaces through painting, revealing the potential beauty in underappreciated parts of the cities they live in. Collage artists Sarah Bentivegna and Hayley Mortin deconstruct and re-appropriate found images into their own creative visions, while Cody Lieberman, Anton Motivans, and Chloe Rowan show us different ways of envisioning ourselves through portraiture. In his dream-inspired illustrations, Iris Esquivel plays with perspective and different layers of reality. Jules Tomi, Jeff Dahdah, Ava Zwolinski, Roald Teffries, Kavya Anchuri and Adrianna Crisol Pineda offer new ways of looking at our environment through interesting uses of photographic perspective, and Jessie-Jamz Ozaeta questions the authority of the professional camera with his iPhone images.听
March 27, 2015 -听Reveries - A Fridge Door Gallery Vernissage
Fridge Door Gallery, 成人VR视频鈥檚 original student-run art gallery,听presented Reveries 蹿辞谤听Nuit Blanche at 成人VR视频.
Jack Kerouac once wrote, 鈥渢he fact that everybody in the world dreams every night ties all mankind together.鈥 Whether it鈥檚 a daydream, a nightmare, a desire or a fantasy, dreams are the workings of an individual鈥檚 inner mind, a state in-between the real and unreal. In their darkest or their brightest state, dreams can become a true source of inspiration, a way to delve into one鈥檚 psyche in order to find deeper meaning or understanding. The Surrealists, inspired by psychoanalysis, used their dreams to tap into their subconscious in order to stimulate their art and writing. For them, the creative potential of someone鈥檚 deep, inner workings was much more powerful than that of conscious thought. While art can be used to depict the world around us, it can also be used to formulate and express one鈥檚 inner world and visions.听
November 14, 2014 -听Ephemera - A Fridge Door Gallery Exhibition
Life is short, yet the world goes on around us. We fill our lives with objects of value, prospects of accomplishment and fulfilment, and dreams of success, knowing all too well that at heart we are all just transient beings, that death is inevitable and that all earthly goods and pursuits are fleeting. The Dutch explored these facts with fascination during their golden age of art through painted studies of vanitas. Closer to our time, Damien Hirst鈥檚 diamond skull "For The Love of God" acts as a clear memento mori 鈥 a reminder of our own mortality. Be it the discovery of a house lost in the woods, the peculiar colour of a fading black eye, or a simple saltine cracker, things disappear to leave room for something new.
The cyclical return of these themes in art however, points to the potential of endurance. This exhibition combines a selection of artworks by 成人VR视频 students, which puts into reconsideration transience and ephemera. Each attempt to capture a moment in time, which the artists felt deserved a second look. We aim for this exhibition to provide a space for viewers to contemplate on these matters, or simply to enjoy the fleeting moment captured by the artists through a variety of media. Viewers will find not only paintings and photography, but also drawing, collage, an audio mix and a performance. As humans, we all hope to one day leave our mark on this planet 鈥 to create, produce or do something which can be remembered as ours once we are gone. Art gives life to a lost moment, lets fame or fashion endure in our memories, ultimately reflecting life鈥檚 ephemeral yet cyclical nature.
听May 22, 2013 -听Legacies Denied: Unearthing the Visual Culture of Canadian Slavery
This exhibition and the accompanying catalogue emerged from a fourth year undergraduate, Art History course, 鈥淐anadian Slavery and its Legacies: a Curatorial Seminar,鈥 taught by Dr. Charmaine Nelson, Associate Professor of Art History. Working with the holdings of the听Rare Books and Special Collections Library听(成人VR视频), the students curated an exhibition, assembling a variety of extraordinary art and visual culture objects of direct relevance to Trans Atlantic Slavery. Like the course, the catalogue and exhibition contest the erasure of Canadian participation in the histories of Trans Atlantic Slavery, instead highlighting the role of Canadian art and visual culture in producing, sustaining and resisting the enslavement of people of African descent and Natives in the territories that became Canada.
