Emily Doucet

Emily Doucet headshotEmily Doucet is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies (2022-2023), working with Professor Jonathan Sterne. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto (2020). Examining a series of encounters between novel photographic formats, private corporations, and state and military postal services, her postdoctoral project examines the mobile politics of photographic communication across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She is also currently preparing a book manuscript based on her doctoral dissertation, which explores the entanglement of technological, historical, and visual arguments that shaped narratives surrounding the nineteenth-century French photographer F茅lix Nadar鈥檚 infamous photographic 鈥渇irsts.鈥 Her research has been funded by the Northrop Frye Centre, the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library, the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and The Image Centre, among other organizations. She writes regularly on historical and contemporary culture for both academic and wider audiences, publishing essays, interviews, and reviews for publications such as Border Crossings, C Magazine, Canadian Art online, Communication + 1, Grey Room, Lady Science, and Public Parking.
