Elle provient du ventricule gauche du cœur et s'étend jusqu'à l'abdomen, où elle se scinde en deux petites artères (les artères iliaques communes). L'aorte distribue le sang oxygéné dans toutes les parties du corps par le biais de la circulation systémique.
