Plan your Post-Academic Job Search with an IDP

Moving away from an academic career often means exploring multiple potential career paths without a well-defined personal roadmap.听
Join this workshop with a Graduate Career Advisor to start envisioning what life after academia looks like and to start building a structured career exploration and job search goals for yourself. 听
In this听interactive workshop,听a听CaPS Grad Career Advisor will: 听
- Provide starting points to听envision,听identify,听and research听careers outside of听academia.听
- Walk you听through the听key听steps of a听non-academic听job search听and the resources available听to support each stage.听
- Guide听you in choosing one step and turning it into a SMART goal you can use as a starting point for exploring, researching, or applying to non-academic jobs.听
We will be using tools and resources from听myPath's Individual Development Plan (IDP)听workbooks,听with a focus on career planning. This workshop counts towards the听IDP requirements for graduate students听set by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.听

What can I do with my Graduate Degree?

If you're a Master's or PhD researcher looking for a job post-graduation, learn how to leverage your research skills in finding your next opportunity. If you're interested in non-academic careers but not sure what's out there, this session walks you through how to step outside of an academic perspective and take a look.听

- Search for jobs by function rather than by subject matter expertise
- Locate prospective employers rather than just open roles听
- Analyze what has worked/not worked for researchers in the past as they made their career transitions to non-academic roles.听听

Whether you're curious about industry jobs or actively applying for a full-time role post-graduation, this workshop shares tips to听optimize your job search strategy.听Bring your questions about hiring processes, the non-academic job market, and job search.

- Learn about听typical hiring processes听and job search strategies for industry and non-academic jobs
- Troubleshoot听common job search hurdles听(e.g., searching for job postings, sending CVs and hearing nothing back, screening interviews)

Industry CVs for Graduate Students

Grad students go on to work in a wide range of industries beyond academia.听An industry or non-academic CV (also known as a resume outside Quebec)听highlights your transferrable skills and experience in ways that will be legible to employers outside higher education.听听

Selling your Transferrable Skills in Interviews听

"Selling" yourself in interviews is a skill that doesn't come naturally to most people. Like many skills, however, you can hone it with practice!
If you are looking to transfer your skills to a career outside of academia, join this interactive workshop to practice communicating your value as a skilled professional.
Working together through interactive scenarios, we will:
- Identify transferrable skills employers want (e.g., problem-solving skills, teamwork skills, communication skills)
- Practice interviewing for jobs where you have the required skills but lack industry experience
- Practice the STAR method to map out compelling answers to skills-focused interview questions
